Celebrating Service: A 3-Phase Vision Project in Memory of Ferdi Marais
The Rotary Club of Hermanus has embarked on a heartfelt three-phase project in honor of the late Ferdi Marais, a deeply admired Rotarian who devoted much of his life to fostering healthier communities. Ferdi’s dedication and unwavering commitment to service continue to inspire our mission to improve the lives of those around us.
Phase 1: A Gift of Vision
In a touching gesture of care, 194 pairs of reading glasses have been distributed to those in need. These glasses, valued at approximately R17,500, will restore clarity and provide countless individuals with the ability to read, work, and navigate daily life more easily. This act embodies Ferdi’s passion for creating lasting impacts through small yet significant interventions.
Phase 2: Transforming Lives Through Surgery
Access to essential healthcare can be life-changing. With this in mind, 60 cataract operations have been funded, amounting to R156,000. These procedures will not only restore vision but also transform the lives of individuals who have faced immense challenges due to impaired sight.
Phase 3: Community Screening Days
Recognising the need for early detection, Rotarians will partner with the local eye clinic to assist in organising and running community screening days. These initiatives will identify individuals with vision-related issues and ensure timely interventions, further extending the legacy of compassionate service that Ferdi Marais upheld.
This project stands as a testament to the power of service, reminding us all of the incredible difference one person’s dedication can make. We thank every Rotarian and supporter who has contributed to this initiative and invite the community to join us in continuing this impactful journey.
Together, we’re not just restoring sight; we’re changing lives.
